Historically, splittail were found as far north as Redding on the Sacramento River and as far south as the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River. Splittail were common in San Pablo Bay and Carquinez Strait following high winter flows until about 1985. They are now largely confined to: the Delta, Suisun Bay, Suisun Marsh, Napa River, Petaluma River, and other parts of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary.
